Not a lot looks to have changed on the site since I last posted something, but I have been updating the ‘Learning’ section with my most recent HTML and CSS pages. I am still working from the Head First tutorials and seem to be understanding everything so far. Haven’t created anything too exciting yet, but I am sure that will come soon.
Books vs Online Tutorials
I am still trying to spend any free time I have learning HTML and CSS, but haven’t quite worked out the best way to go about it yet. There are a lot of online tutorials available, ranging from awful to excellent. One of the better sites I have found so far is w3schools.com. Has a lot of information and seems to be quite easy to follow.
However I am also just starting to work my way through a book, Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML , completing the exercises as I go. I am going to upload the examples onto this website, as while they are very simple and look very dull, I am sure it will help me learn faster.
I will try to keep both methods going for now, until I find what works best for me.
About Me
Just added a little bit of information in the ‘About’ section of the site. Wanted to keep it brief, but may expand on the information some day.
Tutorials and Themes
Just a quick post to update on my progress. Spent the evening on the PC, but wasted too much time trying to work out my team for this weeks Fantasy Football!
Anyway, I did manage to watch some very useful tutorials on HTML and CSS. Found them while visiting Will Goldstone’s blog. Discovered his website a while ago, when searching for Unity help (still interested in learning Unity some day). Watched them all and feel that I have a much better understanding about the basics. Didn’t do any practical examples, but hopefully that will come next.
Other than that I have just downloaded some free Themes for WordPress and tried to find one that works for me. Currently have it setup using zBench, but I am sure that this is going to change.
I guess I should say hello
Welcome. Thanks for stumbling onto this page and for sticking around long enough to read this. This first post isn’t going to be all that interesting (and who’s to say any of the others will be!) as I am really just looking into how WordPress works before I go to bed.
I have spent the last day or so buying my domain name and then working out how to use ftp to get WordPress installed onto my website. My web host does have cPanel setup, allowing me to install WordPress at the press of a button, but I thought that this was too easy. Surely I would learn a lot more doing it the slightly more complicated way. This wasn’t actually too hard to do, the documentation is really easy to follow.

So now that I have it installed and working I can start to learn how I actually go about using it and then off I will go onto my web learning experience.
I should explain what I am attempting to do with this blog and website. I have decided to use some of my spare time to learn more about making websites and I want to use this blog as a way of tracking my progress. I am aiming to teach myself a little about HTML and CSS and whatever else I think I may need to know. I have no previous experience, so progress may be a little slow.
I am still not 100% sure how this is going to develop just yet. I am just going to try to make it up as I go along and see what works.
That’s all for now, it’s getting late. The next post will still likely be about me trying to learn how to use WordPress!
